spendwise

Hi Aino,

Welcome to SpendWise. Most expense apps tell you how much you spent. SpendWise tells you whether you’re spending it too quickly — while there’s still time to adjust.

Here’s how it works:

You set the budget. Your total and your categories, your way.

You log what you spend. It takes about five seconds.

We watch the pace. You’ll see a month-end forecast and a safe amount to spend each day.

Setting up takes about two minutes: pick a currency, a monthly amount and the categories that fit your life.

Setup nudge

Activation

Day 1 (24 h after sign-up)

Only if onboarding is NOT complete. Skip if a budget exists.

Purpose: Remove the most common setup worry (“I don’t know my numbers”) with a low-effort re-ask.

From SpendWise <hello@spendwise.app>
Don’t know your exact numbers? That’s fine
Start with a rough monthly amount. You can change it any time.
Alternative subject lines
  • Your budget doesn’t need to be perfect
  • Aino, a rough budget beats no budget
spendwise

Hi Aino,

A lot of people stop at setup because they don’t know their exact numbers. You don’t need them.

Start with one number: roughly what you spend in a month, rent included. SpendWise suggests a split across categories that you can adjust later.

One tip: mark rent, insurance and loan payments as Fixed. Then paying rent on the 1st won’t be flagged as overspending, because we know it’s scheduled.

It’s your budget. Change it whenever life changes.

Nice work, Aino. Your €1,800 budget for September is set.

Now give it something to work with. Add one thing you bought today: groceries, a bus ticket, a coffee.

Tap + Add expense, type the amount, pick a category, done. On desktop, just press N.

As soon as you do, your dashboard shows how much of each budget you’ve used, how far into the month you are, and what you can safely spend per day.

The pace idea

Education

Day 3

All onboarded users. Skip if unsubscribed from tips.

Purpose: Teach the core differentiator (amount spent vs spent too quickly) so the statuses make sense and feel useful.

From SpendWise <hello@spendwise.app>
€250 of €300 spent. Good or bad?
Three people, same budget, same day, three very different answers.
Alternative subject lines
  • The question most budget apps can’t answer
  • It’s not how much. It’s how fast.
spendwise

Hi Aino,

Three people each have a €300 grocery budget. It’s the 15th of a 30-day month:

Alex has spent €150 → 50% used, 50% of the month gone. On Track.

Bea has spent €250 → 83% used at the halfway point. At this pace she’ll hit ~€500. At Risk.

Chen has spent €320 → past the limit. Over Budget.

Bea hasn’t overspent yet. That’s the point: SpendWise spots it while there are still 15 days to adjust. Her safe allowance is about €3.33/day for groceries.

Every category on your dashboard has a small marker showing where you’d be at an even pace. If the bar is past the marker, you’re ahead of plan.

Alternative subject lines
  • Aino, here’s your week-one pace
  • You can safely spend €18.40/day
spendwise

Hi Aino, one week in. Here’s your snapshot:

Safe to spend: about €18.40 per day for the next 15 days (fixed bills already set aside).

Watch: Grocery — 83% of its budget used, status At Risk.

If something’s running hot, you have options: slow down, or move money from a category that’s under pace. Both are fine; you’re in control.

Keep logging for another week and your forecast gets noticeably sharper.

Hi Aino,

Life gets busy. Here are three ways to make tracking almost automatic:

Log at the till. Amount + category is all we need. Merchant and notes are optional.

Batch it. Once a day, open SpendWise and use Save & add another to log everything in one go.

Set the date. Forgot yesterday? Tap Yesterday and it lands on the right day.

A handful of expenses is enough for your pace and forecast to start working.

Make it yours

Education

Day 12

Onboarded users with ≥ 1 expense. Skip if they already created a custom category.

Purpose: Deepen fit by encouraging custom categories and the fixed/variable split, which improves forecast accuracy.

From SpendWise <hello@spendwise.app>
Your life doesn’t fit 15 categories
Custom categories and fixed costs make your forecasts smarter.
Alternative subject lines
  • Add “Car maintenance” (or anything else)
  • Make your budget actually yours
spendwise

Hi Aino,

The default categories are a starting point. Your life is more specific than that.

Add custom categories like “University expenses”, “Daughter’s activities” or “Car maintenance”. Pick + Create custom category from the expense form or your Budget page.

Mark scheduled bills as Fixed. Rent, insurance and loans are expected, so they never trigger speed warnings.

Rebalance any time. Changes apply from this month forward; your past months stay exactly as they were.

Branching, exit & suppression

  • Exit immediately when the user is Activated: budget created AND ≥ 10 expenses on ≥ 5 different days AND monthly report viewed. Move them to the regular monthly-summary lifecycle.
  • Email 1b only goes to users without a completed onboarding. If still not onboarded 4 days after sign-up, exit to a separate “stalled setup” list (max one more touch at Day 10).
  • Email 2 is event-triggered: send 2 hours after budget creation if there are still 0 expenses; cancel the moment an expense is logged.
  • Email 4 vs 4b split on expense count at Day 7 (≥ 3 vs < 3).
  • Email 5 is skipped for users who have already created a custom category.
  • Email 6 fires on the 1st of the month after signup, but only if the finished month has ≥ 5 expenses; otherwise it’s replaced by 4b’s copy on that date.
  • Suppress all sends if: the user turned off “Email me too” in Settings → Notifications, unsubscribed, deleted their account, or received another SpendWise email in the past 20 hours (shift to the next day, 09:00 local).
  • No re-entry. A deleted-then-recreated account counts as a new signup.
